In this assignment, we were tasked with coming up with 3 Ideas that we thought would act as socially engaged art:
- One thing that I’ve seen on social media a lot lately is “I don’t know how to explain to you that you should care about other people”. And it’s true, you can’t force people to empathize with people, or force understanding. In many ways, people fear what they don’t understand. And while, I’m not as naive to think that simply being able to empathize with people would fix problems, I think it would help. I’d be interested in seeing how a ar/vr experience designed to put you in someone else’s real life experiences would affect people.
- I’m interested in ways of making neighborhoods an interactive experience. Currently, there are sound walk neighborhood tours, that allow you to explore a neighborhood by stopping at certain locations, and listening to audio that tells a story about the neighborhood & that particular location. I’m curious if using AR with a phone would make the experience more interactive, by allowing users to access video and images, as well as sound.
- Pop up art installations around the city that tell a narrative about current issues. Installations would have to be portable, able to be out in the elements, and easy to put up and take down. While I like the pop up nature of the idea, artists would have to make sure that public spaces are being used, and probably regulations followed.
